How to Negotiate a Job Offer Without Risking It

September 6, 2026 · 1 min read

Most employers expect some negotiation — done respectfully, it rarely costs you the offer.

One of the biggest myths in job hunting is that negotiating will make an employer rescind an offer. In reality, reasonable, respectful negotiation is expected and rarely backfires.

Never accept or reject on the spot

"Thank you, I'm excited about this — could I have a day or two to review the full offer?" is completely normal.

Lead with enthusiasm, then the ask

  • State clearly that you're excited about the role
  • Reference your research or another offer, if relevant
  • Name a specific number, not just "more"

Negotiate the whole package, not just salary

Start date, vacation, signing bonus, remote flexibility, and professional development budgets can all be on the table.

Get the final agreement in writing

Once you agree verbally, ask for the updated offer letter before resigning from your current role.
