How to Talk About a Layoff or Firing in an Interview

September 3, 2026 · 1 min read

Honesty and brevity go a long way — you don't need a perfect story, just a professional one.

Explaining a layoff or termination is uncomfortable, but interviewers have heard it many times before, and a short, composed answer usually satisfies the question completely.

Keep it factual and brief

"My position was eliminated in a company-wide restructuring" is enough — you don't need to over-explain or apologize.

Avoid blaming your former employer or manager

Even if it's true, it can raise concerns about how you'd speak about this company in the future.

If it was a performance issue, own it honestly

  • Briefly acknowledge what happened
  • Explain what you learned or changed
  • Point to evidence you've grown since then, if applicable

Pivot quickly to what's next

Spend more time on why you're excited about this role than on the circumstances of leaving the last one.
