Should Your Resume Match Every Job Posting Exactly?

September 22, 2026 · 1 min read

Tailoring matters, but there is a point where it stops being worth the effort.

Tailoring your resume for every single application is good advice taken to an extreme that can actually slow down your search.

What's worth tailoring every time

The top summary section, the order of your skills list, and which achievements you lead with in your most recent role — these take minutes to adjust and directly affect ATS matching and recruiter attention.

What doesn't need constant rewriting

Older roles, your education section, and achievements from years ago rarely need per-application changes — spending an hour rewriting them for each posting has diminishing returns.

A reasonable middle ground

Keep one strong master resume, then spend 10-15 minutes adjusting the top third for each application rather than rebuilding the whole document from scratch.
