Understanding Your Total Compensation Package, Not Just Base Salary

September 7, 2026 · 1 min read

The number on the offer letter is only part of the picture.

Comparing two job offers by base salary alone can be misleading. A full picture of total compensation often changes which offer is actually better.

List every component

  • Base salary
  • Bonus or commission structure
  • Health, dental, and other benefits
  • Retirement matching or pension contributions
  • Vacation and paid time off
  • Remote/hybrid flexibility and its value to you

Ask for specifics, not just names of benefits

"Health benefits" can mean very different things — ask what's actually covered and what you'd pay out of pocket.

Put a rough dollar value on flexibility

If remote work saves you commuting costs and time, that has real, calculable value.

Compare apples to apples

When comparing two offers, build out the full picture for both before deciding which is genuinely stronger.
