What to Do If a Raise Isn't in the Budget Right Now

September 24, 2026 · 1 min de lecture

A "not right now" doesn't have to mean "never" — here is how to keep the conversation open.

Budget constraints are often genuine, not a brush-off — but that doesn't mean the conversation has to end there.

Ask what would change the answer

Request specific, measurable goals that would justify a raise at the next review cycle, and get them in writing or a follow-up email.

Negotiate non-salary items

Additional vacation days, remote work flexibility, a title change, professional development budget, or a one-time bonus can all be negotiated even when base salary is frozen.

Set a follow-up date

Agree on a specific date to revisit the conversation rather than leaving it open-ended — "let's check in again in three months" keeps both sides accountable.
