Should You Disclose Your Current Salary When Asked?

September 8, 2026 · 1 min de lecture

In many places, employers can no longer ask — but the question still comes up informally.

Rules on this vary by province and are evolving, with a general trend toward limiting or banning salary history questions. Even so, it's worth knowing how to handle it if asked.

Know that you're often not required to answer

Depending on the jurisdiction, employers may be restricted from asking, and you're generally not obligated to disclose.

Redirect to expectations instead

"I'd prefer to focus on what this role pays, based on its scope and requirements" is a graceful way to shift the conversation.

If you do share, add context

  • Note if your current package includes unusual benefits
  • Mention if you were underpaid relative to the market
  • Frame it alongside your expectations for the new role

Check the rules where you're job hunting

Rules differ by province, so it's worth a quick check if you're unsure what applies to you.
