The Hidden Job Market: How to Find Roles That Are Never Advertised

August 25, 2026 · 1 min de lecture

A large share of jobs are filled before they're ever posted. Here's how to reach them anyway.

Plenty of positions are filled through referrals, internal promotions, or a manager simply knowing the right person — before a job ad is ever written. This is often called the "hidden job market," and it rewards people who build relationships ahead of time.

Reach out before there's an opening

Contact people at companies you admire just to learn about their work, not to ask for a job. When something opens up, you're already on their radar.

Use informational interviews

  • Ask for 15–20 minutes, not a job
  • Prepare 3–4 specific questions about their role or team
  • Send a short thank-you note afterward

Stay visible in your industry

Comment thoughtfully on posts in your field, attend local events, and share your own work. Visibility turns into opportunity over time.

Tell people you're looking — specifically

"I'm looking for a marketing coordinator role at a mid-size retailer" gets far more useful help than a vague "let me know if you hear of anything."
