When and How to Ask for a Raise

September 6, 2026 · 1 min de lecture

Timing and preparation matter as much as the ask itself.

Asking for a raise can feel uncomfortable, but employers generally expect it to come up periodically — especially after strong performance or added responsibility.

Pick the right moment

  • After a strong performance review or a big win
  • During annual budget/planning cycles, if you know them
  • Not immediately after a company-wide setback, if avoidable

Bring evidence, not just a feeling

A list of specific achievements and added responsibilities since your last raise makes the case concrete.

Practice saying the number out loud

It's easy to freeze on the actual figure — rehearsing it beforehand makes it come out naturally.

Be ready for a "not right now"

Ask what it would take to get there, and when you could revisit the conversation.
