Cover Letters in 2026: Are They Still Worth Writing?

August 29, 2026 · 1 min read

Some employers skip them entirely — others still weigh them heavily. Here's how to decide.

Opinions are split on whether cover letters still matter. The honest answer: it depends on the employer, but a short, well-targeted one rarely hurts and sometimes makes the difference.

Check what's actually requested

If a posting says a cover letter is optional or not requested, a short one can still add value — but keep it brief.

Use it to connect dots your resume can't

  • Why you're changing industries or roles
  • A gap or unusual career move, briefly explained
  • Specific enthusiasm for this company, not just any company

Keep it to three short paragraphs

Recruiters skim. A tight, well-structured letter beats a long, generic one every time.

Never reuse the exact same letter

Even swapping in the company name isn't enough — reference something specific about the role or organization.
