How to Build Genuine Friendships at a Remote or Hybrid Job

September 28, 2026 · 1 min de lecture

Workplace connection takes more intention when you're not sharing a physical space every day.

Workplace friendships tend to form less automatically in remote and hybrid settings, simply because there are fewer unplanned interactions.

Create small, repeatable touchpoints

A recurring informal virtual coffee chat, an optional non-work Slack channel, or grabbing lunch with a colleague on in-office days all create the small repeated contact that friendships tend to grow from.

Be the one who initiates

In a remote setting, connection usually doesn't happen unless someone deliberately starts it — sending the first message is normal, not awkward.

Keep expectations realistic

Not every colleague will become a close friend, and that's fine — even a few genuinely friendly work relationships meaningfully improve day-to-day job satisfaction.
