How to Take Feedback Without Spiraling Into Self-Doubt

September 28, 2026 · 1 min de lecture

Even fair, well-intentioned feedback can trigger an outsized emotional reaction — here is how to manage it.

Feedback, even constructive and kindly delivered, can trigger a much bigger emotional reaction than the moment actually calls for. That reaction is common and manageable.

Separate the feedback from your worth

A note about one piece of work or one behaviour is not a verdict on your overall competence or value, even though it can feel that way in the moment.

Give yourself space before reacting

"Thank you, let me think about this and follow up" is a perfectly reasonable response that avoids reacting defensively or spiraling out loud in the moment.

Look for the actionable part

Most feedback contains one specific, usable point buried in it — finding that point and acting on it is more productive than replaying the entire conversation with anxiety.
