How Far Back Should Your Resume Go?

August 30, 2026 · 1 min de lecture

Older experience isn't always irrelevant — but it doesn't always belong on the first page either.

There's no single rule, but a common guideline is to focus on the last 10–15 years of experience, since that's typically what's most relevant to your current career direction.

Prioritize relevance over recency

A highly relevant role from 12 years ago can matter more than an unrelated one from last year.

Summarize very old roles briefly

  • List the title, company, and dates without full bullet detail
  • Or group early roles under a single "Earlier Experience" heading

Drop dates on very old education if needed

This is a common and reasonable approach for candidates concerned about age bias.

Keep it about what's useful to the employer

The goal is showing you can do this specific job, not documenting your entire career history.
