How to List Contract, Freelance, or Gig Work on a Resume

September 1, 2026 · 1 min de lecture

Non-traditional work experience is valid experience — present it clearly.

Contract and freelance work is increasingly common, and there's a straightforward way to present it that doesn't confuse or concern hiring managers.

Use a clear heading

"Freelance Graphic Designer" or "Independent Contractor" as the title, with your own name as the "company" if there wasn't one client.

Group short-term clients if there are many

  • List 2–3 representative clients or projects individually
  • Summarize the rest as "and additional clients in [industry]"

Show continuity, not just individual gigs

Frame it as an ongoing freelance practice with a date range, rather than a string of disconnected short jobs.

Highlight the skills it demonstrates

Self-direction, client management, and juggling multiple priorities are all real, valuable skills worth naming.
