How to Write a Resume for a Career Change

September 20, 2026 · 1 min de lecture

When your past titles don't match your target role, structure does the heavy lifting.

A career-change resume has a different job than a standard one: it has to translate, not just list.

Lead with a summary

Open with two to three lines connecting your background to the new field — name the transferable skill explicitly rather than assuming the reader will infer it.

Reframe your bullet points

Rewrite past achievements around transferable skills — communication, budget management, leading teams, solving operational problems — rather than industry-specific jargon that won't register with the new field.

Add a skills or projects section

If you've taken courses, earned a certification, or done freelance or volunteer work in the new field, give it its own section near the top so it isn't buried.
