What to Do If You Blank on a Question Mid-Interview

September 23, 2026 · 1 min de lecture

Going blank happens to almost everyone at some point — here is how to recover gracefully.

A momentary blank isn't the disaster it feels like in the moment — how you recover matters more than the pause itself.

Buy yourself a few seconds

"That's a great question, let me think about that for a moment" is a completely normal thing to say and gives your brain time to catch up.

Ask for clarification if that helps

Sometimes restating the question in your own words, or asking the interviewer to rephrase it, is enough to unstick your thinking.

It's okay to circle back

"Can I come back to that one in a minute?" is a reasonable request — interviewers generally respect it more than a rambling non-answer.
