How to Prepare for a Case Interview
Common in consulting and strategy roles, case interviews test how you think, not just what you know.
A case interview presents a business problem and asks you to work through it out loud. The interviewer is grading your process, not just your final answer.
Structure your thinking out loud
Start by clarifying the problem and stating your framework before diving into numbers — silence while you think privately reads poorly, even if your final answer is right.
Practice with real frameworks
Familiarize yourself with common structures (profitability trees, market-sizing approaches, competitive analysis frameworks) but avoid forcing a rigid framework onto a problem it doesn't fit.
Ask clarifying questions
Good candidates ask questions before assuming details. It signals rigor rather than uncertainty.
Practice under time pressure
Case interviews are practiced skills — rehearse with a friend or a case-prep resource until your structure becomes automatic.
